Urology

Diagnosis, prevention, treatment, progression, and causes of diseases of the genitourinary system. Diseases within this group fall under the expertise of a urologist. Andrology, which is a separate field within urology, focuses on the study of the progression and treatment of genitourinary diseases in males.

Symptoms and main conditions

The presence of symptoms such as pain in the bladder and lower back, burning during urination, frequent urination, blood or pus in the urine, urinary incontinence, and so on, may indicate diseases of the genitourinary system. When the first signs of a disease appear, it is important to consult a urologist.

The main urological diseases include bladder inflammation, urethral inflammation, phimosis (tight foreskin) in males, and genital organ inflammation in males. The scope of a urologist’s expertise also includes the treatment of urinary incontinence, urinary stone disease, tumors of the genitourinary system, particularly the prostate in males, and other related conditions.

What does an urologist do:

  • Consults the patient.
  • Conducts patient examinations, including instrumental or ultrasound procedures.
  • Prescribes laboratory tests, takes bacterial swabs for culture, and refers for specialised investigations.
  • Interprets the results of the examinations.
  • Prescribes and administers treatment, including surgical interventions if necessary.
